Your first draft

The approved version cannot be overwritten. Whoever wants to change something starts a draft — with one click.

A word on words first: this guide says draft. The English interface still says branch in most places — Create branch, New branch, Open branches. They are the same thing.

Why you cannot type

Open a document in the approved version, try to type, and nothing happens. A yellow bar above the page reads “Branch main is read-only — switch to a branch to edit”. It is not an error, it is a safeguard: what is in force is never overwritten by accident.

The approved version. The bar shows main with a lock instead of a draft’s name; the yellow bar carries the Create branch button.

Start a draft

  1. In the yellow bar, click Create branch on the right.
  2. That is all. The app creates a draft, switches you into it and keeps the same document open. The yellow bar goes away and the writing buttons appear.

A draft started this way gets a random name — bold-fox, say. It works just as well, but in a week you will not know what it was about. So the second way is better.

A draft with a name of your own

  1. In the document bar, click the name of the version — in the approved version it is main with a lock.
  2. In the menu, under New branch, type a name into the field: what the draft is about. “Accessories in warranty claims”, say.
  3. Confirm with the ✓ beside the field.
The draft menu in the approved version. Type a name into the field under New branch and confirm with ✓.

You can rename a draft later: in the same menu, an open draft has a pencil (Rename branch…).

Switching between drafts

The same menu switches. Under Open branches are the drafts of the project; click a name to switch into it. The main row takes you back to the approved version.

The draft menu. The approved version (main) at the top, the field for a new draft under it and the list of open ones — the ticked one is where you are.

What happens to a draft afterwards

  • You publish it — its changes become part of the approved version. See Approving and publishing.
  • You leave it — nothing happens. It waits for you, for weeks if need be.
  • You close it without publishing — in the Changes panel, through the three dots ⋮ (Branch actions) and Close the branch…. It stays in the history and can be reopened from the project overview.
